Bhakti - Kunti's Prayer

At the end of the Mahabharatha war, the Pandavas and the Kauravas went to the Ganga to perform ablutions for their departed kinsmen. Sri Krishna, sage Daumya and other rishis consoled the grief stricken Pandava brothers and Dhritarashtra and others by saying that all created beings are subject to death which cannot be averted. Having secured the lost kingdom for Yudhisthtra and after helping him to perform Ashwameda sacrifices, Sri Krishna mounted his chariot to return to Dwaraka.

Kunti then thanked Sri Krishna and sang his glories. And she prayed to Krishna - Now listen to this prayer very carefully -  Kunti’s prayer is very famous in the Bhagawatam.

She prayed to Krishna. She said, let calamities befall us every now and then. People pray - " Please free me from my calamities. Let me get a better job, let me have a house,
let me have this, let me have that. Bring me happiness".  Kunti’s prayer to Krishna, let all calamities befall us every now and then. Why? So that we may have your darshan when you come to protect us. From time to time, when we are in trouble, by seeing you we can get out of the cycle of births  and deaths. If we have no calamities, how will you come to save us? So bring calamities upon us - more and more.

Dangerous prayer, specially when made to Krishna directly. So this is a prayer which should only be uttered in all sincerity because if it is uttered in all sincerity really calamities will begin to befall. But one should be able to stand then on one’s feet. I always tell people who read about the lives of saints who went before the lord and say take everything away and I want only you. They said it. But if somebody without proper maturity imitates this ....then when God begins to pull things from under you then you begin to say .....enough enough!

So this is a very serious affair, Kunti was developed enough to say "Take everything away, let calamities fall so that I can see you when you come to save us. Your incarnation among men, bees and aquatic creatures is only to protect the righteousness. It is a mere sport of yours".

Krishna said,"It shall be as you desire", and smiled at Kunti, that’s all. Kunti was happy - can you imagine somebody being happy with calamities?!

A Treasure In Our House

How may we forgive those that have wronged us? Every wrong done to us is a call to enter into the depths within and contact the Higher Self.  When we do this, we will forget the wrong and forgive the wrong-doer, give him over, help him on his way.

This is what is meant by loving the enemy.  Significant, in this connection, are the words of Sadhu Vaswani: “Love, love, love thy enemy. And though he hates thee as a thorn, thou wilt blossom as a rose.”

Shantideva was a prince, who renounced the throne and set out in quest of wisdom. Having attained the object of his quest, he came and worked as a teacher at the University of Nalanda. He said: - “An enemy is like a treasure found in my house, won without labour of mine; I must cherish him, for he is a helper in the way to Enlightenment.

IT IS DUE TO THE OUTCOME OF MY PAST DEEDS THAT MY ATTACHMENT TO SAI HAS INCREASED AND I BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE HIS INCONCEIVABLE POWER. HOW CAN I ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE IT?
SAI YOU ARE MY LAST RESORT, YOU ARE MY REFUGE, YOU FULFIL THE DEVOTION OF THE DEVOTEE. O, GURURAYA, YOU ARE BLISS INCARNATE

We Need Both Fate And Free Will

We Need Both Fate And Free Will
Q-Are we free agents or puppets in the hands of Destiny?
Could we change our fate?
One view is that you are a prisoner of fate. Whatever you do, you simply cannot change it. Another view is that we are absolutely free. You have freedom of choice between picking right or wrong. At every step of life, you can make the effort to improve your condition. Acting thus, you could change your karma and so alter your destiny.
These two aspects of an individual’s condition are like the twin blades of a pair of scissors. The first is ichcha shakti, freedom of choice; the second is prarabdha karma, accumulated karma. When the two blades act together, the scissors does its job. You cannot cut a piece of cloth with just one blade of the scissors. Likewise, fate and free will are both necessary for action.
Karma determines many things that you cannot change. It determines the type of family into which you are born, your race and the type of body in which you are born.       You might wish to change the shape of your nose or increase your height by a few centimeters and perhaps technology finds a way to do all this. Yet, there is scope for free will even in situations where change seems impossible. You always have the choice of reacting to your fate in either a positive or negative manner. This is always within your power!
Q:Why are we not born equal?
A: All are created equal. But in the same family, all children do not have equality of ability or intelligence. Is this inequality the result of karma? If so, is it fair? The answer to both questions, is ‘yes’. You are the architect of your own destiny. Every thought, emotion, wish and action creates karma. The good or bad we do affects us, and remains with us until we balance them out.
Do you know the story of a Polish Air Force pilot, Roman Tursky? He was flying over Germany when he had to make a forced landing. He sent his plane for repairs and spent the night in a hotel. The next morning, in the corridor, a man came running and collided against him. He was pale with fear and cried, "Gestapo! Gestapo!" He was being hounded by the Secret Police. Tursky pushed the man into his room, under his bed. Soon the police came in and interrogated Tursky. He did not understand their language, and the police went away.

The pilot offered to take this man to Warsaw where he was flying, but helped him get off a little before reaching the airport, as the police there could search his plane. Sure enough, when he landed at Warsaw, the police was already there to make a search for the man.
Soon thereafter, in the Second World War, Poland was occupied by Germany. Tursky flew to England and joined the RAF, and became a war hero. He was a brave man, but his plane crashed. The critically injured Tursky was taken to the nearest hospital; he’d slipped into coma. When he recovered, he found a man looking at him. He sid to Tursky,  "Do you remember me? You saved me. This morning I read the news that you were in coma, and I flew here." "What for?" asked Tursky. "Because," the man answered, "I wanted to help. They say that I am one of the best brain surgeons. I operated on you."

Q: Are we free agents or puppets in the hands of Destiny? Could we change our fate?

Meaning Of Love Of God

Love means strong affection. Love is a natural phenomenon; an elevated kind of positive response towards someone you feel is loveable. Love cannot be created in a vacuum; it requires a strong base of affection.

Love of God is this same kind of strong affection. The basis of this love is quite natural when one discovers that one was created by God and that it was God who has given us human beings all such bounties as planet earth, the life-support system, oxygen, water and food, for instance. All these things were not created by humans. They are precious gifts bestowed by someone else. When one discovers this fact, one naturally becomes a lover of God. Thus, love of God is the outcome of one’s discovery.

Every sincere person reaches a stage in life when he faces some basic questions such as, how did I come into existence, how is it that I find myself in a world that is extremely favourable to me? One realises that this compatibility between man and the rest of the universe is so unique that science has observed that the universe has been custom-made for man. Love is in fact an acknowledgment of this. When we endeavour to acknowledge our super-benefactor, we call it love of God.

Although love is an inner feeling, it comes naturally to us to give it an external expression. It is said that man is a social animal, so it is but natural that one’s inner love should also find some expression in terms of social relationships. It is this social expression of one’s inner feeling that is called peace. In terms of God, love is a psychological acknowledgment of the Creator, and in terms of society, love is manifested in peaceful living among other members of society.

It is not relevant to ask how, if we cannot see God, we can express our love towards Him. This contention may have been valid in the era before nuclear science, but after the emergence of nuclear science it is totally invalid. Nuclear science has successfully established that nothing is observable in this world. For example, everyone loves his mother, but in terms of modern science, no one is able to see his mother. One’s mother, as well as other things, is nothing but a combination of numerous unobservable electrons. In fact, ‘mother’ is an unobservable inner being whom we see with reference to her external body. Similarly, God is an unobservable being of this kind whom we see through His creation. In such a world, it is irrational to say that one cannot love God because one cannot observe Him.

Love of God is not simply a philosophical issue: it is rooted in the very nature of man. The fact is that if you receive some good things from anyone, you cannot do other than acknowledge his generosity. In this sense, love of God is a natural phenomenon.

If you add a pinch of dye to a glass of water, all of the water becomes coloured. So, too, in the case of love. When a person has love in his heart for his Creator, at the same time he cannot resist showing his love to his neighbours. And in this electronic age, the whole world is one’s neighbour.

Love has two dimensions: theoretical and practical. In terms of the theoretical dimension, love means love of God and in terms of the social, love means love of all beings.

FOR THOSE WHO SURRENDER TO SAI SAMARTHA, HE HAS AVOIDED MANY CALAMITIES OF THEIRS. THEREFORE, FOR MY OWN SELFISH PURPOSE, I BOW AT HIS FEET.

thought for the day

By: Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Q: Can we stop unnecessary thoughts from arising?

A: It is impossible to know a thought before it comes. You know them as they come, and if they are stupid, you will simply laugh at them and they will move away. When your inner faculties are strong, you will let go of the stupid thought, and not act on it. You will act only on those thoughts which you will find beneficial. Thoughts arrive anyway. But you choose to act or not act – through awareness.

If you are not aware, you simply act on the strongest impulse or thought. But if you are alert, then you choose to act or not to act. A sleepwalker has no control over where he is or what he is doing. He simply walks. But the moment you are awakened, and you are walking, then you choose to walk either left, right, or straight... you know. Today, mostly everyone is a sleepwalker;few act out of awareness. We act on the strongest impulse. If you are aware and acting, that is the right action.

Once you are born, slowly, you start enjoying this world. A newborn is neither rejoicing nor rejecting the five senses. He does not even recognise his mother for a couple of weeks. He is in himself. Even when he appears to be looking at somebody, he does not look at anyone. But gradually he starts enjoying the world. First he looks around, he gets accustomed to seeing, and then hearing, smelling and tasting, and then, when he grows he will hold and touch. But is the child not joyful even before experiencing the world through the five senses? A chid is joyful. He is experiencing joy even before he comes into contact with the world of the five senses.

Are the joys that we find in the object, or are they in your senses? Most people think the joy they feel is in the object, but joy is in their senses. Joy is in the capacity to relate the object with the Self. And the peak of any sensory or sensual experience takes you inward. If you look at beautiful scenery you say “Wow!” And you close your eyes immediately. If you smell something good, you take a deep breath and say, “Aha, very nice!”

Each of the senses leads you to a point deep inside you that is the fountain of joy. The joy from a touch, sex, sight, music, smell, or taste, comes from a source deep within. And if you don’t move within to that point, joy is short-lived. And if you are just clinging to the external object, it no more gives you joy or pleasure. People are not joyful, they are the opposite – they are miserable. This is because they are clinging on to the sense objects rather than the source of joy.

The word is a beautiful package. The world is not bad. It is gift-wrapped. But if you are stuck with the wrapping paper, you will not even open it. You will not see the gift inside the package that has been given to you. That is what most people do, hold on to the wrapper outside.

As long as you hold on to the wrappers you cannot get past them. If you are holding on to stones in your hands, your hands will not be free to take flowers, because your hands are full of rocks. You have to drop the rock in order to enjoy the flowers. ‘Be a witness’.

sanjay sharma

Humans have the remarkable ability to get exactly what they must have  But there is a difference between a "must" and "want."

The best motivating is self-motivating .The guy says ,"I wish someone would come by and turn me on."What if they don't show up? You've got to have a better plan for your life.

When you know what you want ,and you want it badly enough you'll find a way to get it .

Motivation alone is not enough If you have an idiot and you motivate him ,now you have a motivated idiot.

If you wish to find ,you must search .Rarely does a good idea interrupt you.

your potential

Know the self to be sitting in a chariot. The body to be chariot, the intellect the charioteer, and the mind the reins
You were born with potential you were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling,so don't.
It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good both for oneself and others.
the most enlightened people in the world embrace their their full potential of light and dark.
One's only rival is one's own potentialities. One's only failure is failing to live up to one's own possibilities in this sense every man can be king and must therefore be treated like king.

Love For Truth

The knower of truth is never miserable in the world, for the whole universe is filled with himself alone.

Those who are attuned to truth, love the truth. The lord himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.

Truth can only come to the mind that is empty of the known. It comes in a state in which the known is absent, not functioning.

Truth is immediate and radiant. It is not that truth has to be discovered - only you have to become aware.

Whenever you have truth it must be given with love, or the message will be rejected.

People say they love truth, but in reality they want to believe that which they love is true

Knowledge Vs Ignorance

Perseverance,in seeking to gain the knowledge of the supreme spirit and perception of the gain that comes from the truth, this is cold knowledge. All that is contrary to this is ignorance.

Ignorance is the failure to discriminate between the permanent and the impermanent the pure and the impure, bliss and suffering, the self and the non-self. When ignorance is destroyed, the self is liberated from it's identification with this world. This liberation is enlightenment.

Knowing much is ignorance, knowing only one is wisdom.

Knowledge leads to unity, but ignorance to diversity, so long as god seems to be outside and far away, there is ignorance. But when god is realized within, that is true knowledge.
